Italy rugby supremo Giancarlo Dondi has hinted he may look abroad again for a new coach following Frenchman Pierre Berbizier's decision to quit as boss of the Azzurri.
Berbizier announced earlier this week he would not be extending his contract which expires after this autumns World Cup.
His departure leaves the Italian Rugby Federation (FIR) with a large hole to fill.
Under Berbizier, Italy have made steady progress and in 2007 enjoyed their most successful RBS 6 Nations campaign, winning two games - including their first on foreign soil.
FIR president Dondi accepts careful consideration will be given to appointing his successor.
He said: We will take our time searching for an experienced manager who knows our background.
I can't say if he will be French again or maybe from another country. The only thing I can say is that we will look for the best solution possible.
Dondi was full of praise for the way Berbizier carried out his job after replacing John Kirwan in April 2005.
He added: Certainly Pierre has had a huge impact on us. But I believe the reasons why he wont renew his contract with us are genuine, so we must respect his wish and after the World Cup we must look forward to keep going as we did in the last Six Nations.
His loss is huge but not critical. The way in which he coached the team over the last few years was outstanding but we must not forget the backroom staff who have also been working hard to get Italy to a good level in world rugby.
Also, we must not forget the players themselves who have grown individually and most of them are now playing for some of the best clubs in Europe.
So even without an important personality like Pierre, Italy must go on, targeting important goals and working hard for the future.
