Cueto raring to go
15 March 2007, 8:48 am
Mark Cueto is ready to put a nightmare run of injuries behind him and make his presence felt in a new role for England.
Cueto has established himself as a proven Test match finisher, with 13 tries in 18 appearances since making his England debut against Canada during the 2004 autumn series.

All those contributions came from the wing, but he now finds himself at full-back as England tackle RBS 6 Nations wooden-spoon favourites Wales on Saturday.

And Cueto, who has been preferred to World Cup winner Josh Lewsey in the number 15 shirt, is hoping for an overdue injury-free run.

Various injury troubles, including ankle and calf muscle problems, put him way behind schedule for this seasons RBS 6 Nations tournament, with his first appearance set to arrive in the tournament finale.

Cueto said: It has been a nightmare. To be honest, I wanted to get back earlier, but the boys have been doing well.

After the win against France last weekend, the team has got a lot of confidence. It was great to see the young lads doing so well, and the atmosphere in the squad is as good as it ever has been.

Cueto has only featured at full-back eight times in five seasons for his club Sale Sharks, but he added: I will be going out to play my usual game.

There is not that much difference between full-back or wing - they are similar positions.

I am comfortable there. In the days of (former England coach) Clive Woodward, he wanted every player in the backs to be able to play in any position. The game has moved in that direction.

I am going to have to concentrate a bit more because playing wing is second nature to me.

On the wing, you dont just stand there waiting for the ball. If you did, you might only touch the ball two or three times in a match. You come off your wing and search for it, and it is the same at full-back.

For me it is an even freer role, and I see my future there.
