Brown keen for French exam
12 March 2007, 3:20 pm
Scotland flanker Kelly Brown is desperate to continue his back-row education against France on Saturday.
Brown has started every RBS 6 Nations Championship game in 2007 and is becoming an established member of the pack.

The Borders forward was handed his opportunity during the November Tests due to injuries to key men such as Jason White, Simon Taylor and Allister Hogg.

Brown, as well as Edinburghs David Callam, took the chance with both hands and Hogg who looked a future Lions tourist throughout 2006 has had to settle for a place on the bench in this seasons Six Nations.

Coach Frank Hadden now has a plethora of options in the back row with Taylor also back to something approaching his best.

Brown is eager to be picked for the trip to Paris and potentially face Serge Betsen, Imanol Harinordoquy and Sebastien Chabal.

Well wait to see what happens with selection but if selected it would be a massive game, Brown said.

I played against Betsen and Harinordoquy for the Borders against Biarritz and they are both world-class players, but if selected its another massive test and great experience. Its one Id look forward to.

I dont feel as if I am established in the side yet because there is so much strength in depth in the back row in Scotland that you have to play well just to keep your place.

Its been going okay personally but its been disappointing the team hasnt won more games, especially the last two at Murrayfield.

The competition definitely keeps you on your toes and it drives you on. I know the other guys feel the same and are always striving to get better and that can only be a good thing.

Playing at seven Im constantly learning and Im hoping that Im gradually getting better at my role in the side. You learn different things from each side you face.

Sevens specialist Brown believes Scotland held their own against Simon Easterby and company in the 19-18 defeat at the hands of Ireland.

The performance was a considerable improvement on the shock loss to Italy but, like Hadden himself, Brown knows the side can produce much more.

He added: It was a pretty tough game all round and we knew it was going to be like that. It was just disappointing that we couldnt close it out.
