Nathan Hines has revealed his frustration at the errors which led to Scotland crashing to defeat against Italy in the RBS 6 Nations Championship.
Scotland gifted Pierre Berbiziers side three tries in the opening six minutes at Murrayfield and faced a huge task to turn around the early 21-0 deficit.
All three tries - from Mauro Bergamasco, Andrea Scanavacca and Kaine Robertson - were scored following mistakes in Scotlands misfiring backline.
When you are 21 points down your mindset changes and its a very difficult situation to come back from, Hines said
If you get 21 points of a start then you dont really need to think too much about what else you need to do in attack. You just need to defend as if your life depends on it.
It put them in a strong position and they held on. In fact they played some rugby in the second half and put some more points on the board.
Now we need to get the show back on the road with Ireland, who are playing very well, up next.
Hines was a little more philosophical about the backline failings which presented Italy with such a handsome early advantage - but fully expects a dressing-down from the Scotland management this week.
The Australian-born lock said: We tried a few things early on but they didnt come off. What can you do in that situation?
We just put the first one down to chance and tried to have belief that what we were trying to do would work.
Obviously we then threw a couple of interceptions as they were happy to put pressure on us and let us come up with the mistakes.
You cant really account for that other than just try to cut out the errors. All we can do now is look forward because if you are going to dwell on a loss then youre not really concentrating on the next game.
Well have a debrief during the week and no doubt well get a bit of a going over but thats ok. We need to look at ourselves and understand why we made those errors when we were under pressure.
But to be fair to Italy they did play their own game and played it well. They capitalised on what we did wrong. What they did they did well.
