Berbizier fears Paterson's boot
24 February 2007, 8:21 am
Italy coach Pierre Berbizier fears Chris Paterson's deadly right boot could undermine his team's quest to secure a first ever away win in the RBS 6 Nations Championship.
Paterson was recently hailed by Frank Hadden, Scotlands head coach, as the most consistent kicker in European rugby.

He has kicked 11 out of his 12 attempts at goal in Scotlands first two games in this seasons RBS 6 Nations, and in last seasons competition had a success rate of 89% by far the best average in the Championship.

This strike-rate has prompted Berbizier to warn his players they must be on their best behaviour at Murrayfield.

He said: Discipline is essential. Against England the referee made mistakes but so did we and we need to improve on that this week.

We conceded 13 penalties when we played England, and during the November internationals we conceded six penalties on average against a great kicker like Chris Paterson we will lose if we do that again.

Berbiziers concerns about this match turning into a battle of the boot - like in Scotlands last match as they won 21-9 against Wales at Murrayfield a fortnight ago - are made worse by the fact his own man has been struggling to find his kicking form in recent weeks.

Andrea Scanavacca is a good kicker in the Italian championship, but he has had a bad start to this RBS 6 Nations.

Kicking one out of five is not good enough to win international rugby matches, and I hope he will have a better strike rate, said Berbizier.

Italy got off to a disastrous start to this seasons Championship, with a 39-3 home defeat against France.

But they bounced back, and gave England a real fright at Twickenham a week later.

Carlo Checchinato, the Italian team manager, is hoping to see some more of the same this weekend.

We are confident in the work we are doing at this time, and that is the most important thing, he said.

I was disappointed with our performance against France but the players showed great spirit against England two weeks ago, and I am sure we will put in a similar performance against Scotland this week except with less mistakes and less penalties.

If we do that, I think that will be enough.
