Hadden hands Dewey chance to impress
8 February 2007, 10:04 am
Scotland head coach Frank Hadden has challenged Rob Dewey to show he is worth a place in the World Cup team.
Dewey, 23, will make his first starting appearance in the RBS 6 Nations on Saturday, when Scotland take on Wales at Murrayfield.

Both teams will be looking to bounce back from opening weekend defeats; Scotland against England at Twickenham, and Wales at home against Six Nations title favourites Ireland.

Inside centre Dewey will be one of nine Edinburgh players in Haddens side, after he, Phil Godman and Scott Murray were called in at the expense of Glasgows Andrew Henderson, Dan Parks and Alastair Kellock.

Dewey, who sustained a knee cartilage injury on his Scotland debut in November, made a try-scoring appearance after coming off the bench in the defeat against England last week.

Now Hadden is looking forward to seeing how the Six Nations debutant copes in a starting role.

Hadden said: Rob Dewey did well coming off the bench last week.

Hes a young fellow who, due to injury, hasnt played a lot of rugby in the last few years.

But with the World Cup looming I think that its appropriate that we give him the opportunity, to see what chance he has of fulfilling that undoubted potential in the short term.

Hadden watched on as Wales lost 19-9 to Ireland on Sunday, but saw sufficient evidence to believe Gareth Jenkins team can be a big threat this weekend.

I thought that had Wales scored in the first half, when they should have done, they probably would have gone on to win the game, said Hadden.

But they didnt and thats how these games are, so close to call. Anything can happen in a game of rugby. Nobodys got a crystal ball for predicting the outcomes.

But were pretty confident that Wales are going to bring a very attractive brand of rugby to Murrayfield this Saturday and we think the crowd are going to absolutely love it.

Dewey is eager to showcase his talent at the sold-out stadium, and said: Im absolutely delighted to get the opportunity to play against Wales - (it was my) first Six Nations game last weekend and Im rewarded with a start this weekend.

Hopefully I can repay Frank with a good performance for myself and for the team.
