England coach Brian Ashton insisted Saturday's 42-20 Calcutta Cup romp over Scotland marked the dawn of a new era.
Under new captain Phil Vickery, England put their nightmare autumn run of results to bed in emphatic style by getting their RBS 6 Nations campaign off to a dream start in front of an 82,000 full house at Twickenham.
Jonny Wilkinson kicked seven goals from nine attempts in a man-of-the-match display and, in a performance that rekindled memories of Englands 2003 World Cup triumph, Jason Robinson grabbed a brace of tries.
Weve drawn a line under the autumn, said Ashton, who succeeded Andy Robinson following Englands eighth defeat in nine games at the hands of South Africa in November.
Its a brand new start, its a new team. We had to find a starting point and I think we found that starting point today.
We need to look at areas of the game we can improve on because I have no doubt next weeks game (against Italy) will be difficult.
Although Wilkinson caught the eye with his Calcutta Cup record 27-point haul, Ashton was quick to pay tribute to his half-back partner Harry Ellis, who produced a string of clinical breaks to destroy the disappointing Scots.
I did actually say to him when he came off the pitch that he must have been pretty close to man of the match, said Ashton.
That was the best number nine display he has shown for England which a credit to him. It shows the development in his game.
He is actually looking now for opportunities to create space and to make so many clean breaks in an international is unusual but its also credit to the forwards who drove the Scottish forwards back and pulled them in to create the space.
Ashtons decision to recall Wilkinson for his first international since the World Cup final - which was criticised before kick-off by Andy Robinson - was fully vindicated, according to both the new head coach and Vickery.
Hes come back and done it again, said Ashton. He played better than when he last played and I thought he controlled the game pretty well.
Hes a world-class goalkicker and I thought he tackled particularly well.
Vickery said: Having Jonny around gives you a huge amount of confidence. He certainly makes my life a little easier.
