Olly Morgan has been drafted into the England team for Saturday's RBS 6 Nations Championship opener against Scotland at Twickenham.
The uncapped Morgan, 21, will replace his Gloucester colleague Iain Balshaw at full-back, with Balshaw failing to recover from a groin injury suffered during training at Bath University on Wednesday.
Morgan was called into the senior squad initially as a precautionary measure from England Saxons duty in Exeter, where he was preparing for Friday nights match against Italy A.
The loss of Balshaw, whose England career has repeatedly stalled through injuries, is a blow to new England head coach Brian Ashton, but Morgans English Premiership form suggests he will relish the challenge.
With Balshaw out, Ashton could have switched either Josh Lewsey or Jason Robinson from wing duties, so Morgans promotion can be viewed as a resounding vote of confidence by the boss.
Ashton said: "I believe we need to pick the best players in their right positions.
"Mathew Tait (a possible option off the bench) has only played full-back once in his life, and I did not consider moving Lewsey or Robinson because they are best on the wing.
"Olly was very close to playing (for England) during the autumn before he was injured. He has all the qualities of an old-fashioned full-back, which he will find handy against Scotland.
"He is good under the high ball, he is strong, and I am sure when the time is right he will come into the attack."
Millfield School product Morgan, an England Under-21 and Under-19 international, has made 38 appearances for Gloucester and scored eight tries since joining them during the summer of 2004.
