Thomas charge gives Wales headache
27 January 2007, 12:34 pm
Wales head coach Gareth Jenkins has been presented with a major selection headache after Gareth Thomas was called to appear at a disciplinary hearing just three days before the RBS 6 Nations clash with Ireland.
Thomas faces a misconduct complaint for alleged aggressive and offensive behaviour towards Ulster supporters during Toulouses controversial European Cup victory last Sunday.

Jenkins is set to pick his side to face Ireland tomorrow night - but if Thomas is found guilty on Thursday and hit with a suspension he would be ruled out of the game.

The indications are that Jenkins will still consider Thomas for selection even if he has to make changes to the Wales starting XV later in the week.

Thomas is a key figure for Wales following injuries to wingers Shane Williams and Mark Jones and doubts over the fitness of Tom Shanklin.

The Cardiff outside centre has suffered a recurrence of a thigh injury and has now not played since December 27.

If available then Thomas, who has played the majority of his Test rugby at full-back, would provide options for Wales in both positions.

But if not, Jenkins could turn to the versatile Hal Luscombe and then either Cardiff centre Jamie Robinson or rookie winger Chris Czekaj.

Jenkins said earlier this week: Sunday night is going to be a difficult night and we are going to burn the midnight oil. We have selection headaches in front of us.
