Wing worries for England
23 January 2007, 5:00 pm
England head coach Brian Ashton faces a potential wing crisis ahead of next weekend's opening RBS 6 Nations clash with Scotland after Jason Robinson, Mark Cueto and Paul Sackey were ruled out of this week's Twickenham training camp.
The injured trio reported for duty yesterday but were sent back to their clubs after being assessed by the England medical team.

Ashton said: I have decided that Jason, Mark and Paul should all continue their rehab and recovery programmes with their clubs.

Our medical team will be working closely with the club medics and I will be kept fully informed of their progress.

Ashton added that lock Louis Deacon (knee), prop Phil Vickery (ankle) and flanker Magnus Lund (calf) would all sit out training today.

Northampton hooker Steve Thompson and Bristol scrum-half Shaun Perry were scheduled to take a limited part in the session.

But the wing issue is looming as a major problem for Ashton just 10 days before England tackle Scotland in his first game in charge.

Robinson missed Sales European Cup defeat to the Ospreys at the weekend with a neck injury and he is set to sit out this Saturdays Premiership clash with Gloucester.

Sale coach Kingsley Jones explained Robinson was paying the price for playing six games in 19 days during a packed Christmas and New Year fixture schedule.

He said: For him (Jason) to go straight in against Scotland after not playing for two weeks is a big ask but that will be Englands call.

Cueto has still not shaken a calf injury while Sackey is suffering with a knee problem which could keep him sidelined for up to a month.

Of the available resources in the current squad, Iain Balshaw and Josh Lewsey can both play on the wing.

Mathew Tait is also a potential back-three option. He filled in as a winger on the summer tour of Australia and was, intriguingly, employed as a full-back for Newcastle last weekend.

Otherwise, Ashton could call on Ben Cohen and James Simpson-Daniel who were omitted from the main party and included in the England Saxons squad.
