Henson and Shanklin reunited
31 October 2006, 2:51 pm
Gareth Jenkins has reunited Wales' Grand Slam centre partnership of Gavin Henson and Tom Shanklin for Saturday's opening autumn international against Australia at the Millennium Stadium.
Shanklin returns to the international arena after recovering from a career-threatening knee injury which forced an early return from the 2005 Lions tour.

Henson, who has been playing at fly-half for the Ospreys, underwent groin surgery last season and also returns to the Wales starting line-up for the first time since the 2005 Six Nations triumph.

So too does Ospreys number eight Ryan Jones, who is back near his best after undergoing shoulder surgery following the 2005 Lions tour.

Kevin Morgan, who suffered a foot injury last November and missed the 2006 Six Nations, returns at full-back with former captain Gareth Thomas and Shane Williams on the wings.

Up front, tight-head prop Adam Jones has been named in the starting XV despite suffering an ankle injury playing for the Ospreys in the Heineken Cup against Stade Francais at the weekend.

Ian Evans and Ian Gough are the chosen second-row partnership and there is no place in the squad for Ospreys lock Brent Cockbain, who faces a Heineken Cup disciplinary hearing this week after being cited for stamping.

Jenkins, preparing for his first home Test in charge of Wales, said: We are blessed with an extremely strong squad in most positions and have had some tough decisions to make, but have selected on form and form alone.

This squad of 30 or so players is the strongest that Wales have been able to boast for some time, but we are at the beginning of a process as a management group and this is our first chance to get it right.

Past reputations have been disregarded and we have looked at the form players in Welsh rugby and overseas and selected the players that we feel are at the top of their game.

Wales face a potential club versus country row with Worcester after including prop Chris Horsmann on the bench.

Saturdays fixture falls outside of the official International Rugby Board Test window and Premier Rugby have told Worcester they are not obliged to release players without compensation.

Wales team: K Morgan (Newport Gwent Dragons); G Thomas (Toulouse), T Shanklin (Cardiff Blues), G Henson (Ospreys), S Williams (Ospreys); S Jones (Llanelli Scarlets, capt), D Peel (Llanelli Scarlets); G Jenkins (Cardiff Blues), M Rees (Llanelli Scarlets), A Jones (Ospreys), I Gough (Newport Gwent Dragons), I Evans (Ospreys), J Thomas (Ospreys), M Williams (Cardiff Blues), R Jones (Ospreys)
Replacements: R Thomas (Cardiff Blues), D Jones (Ospreys), C Horsman (Worcester), AW Jones (Ospreys), M Phillips (Cardiff Blues), J Hook (Ospreys), M Jones (Llanelli Scarlets)
