Jenkins takes his time
22 August 2006, 6:33 pm
Wales coach Gareth Jenkins is aiming to make a long-term appointment as captain as he sets his sights on the 2007 World Cup.
Jenkins claims he won't be rushed into picking his captain as he wants the new appointment to take charge of the national side through the four Invesco Perpetual Series matches in November, the five 2007 RBS 6 Nations games, the Invesco Perpetual Series warm-up clashes next summer and the 2007 World Cup in France.

Jenkins will announce his 'Rugby World Cup' captain in October after looking at a number of possible leaders during the first month of the new season.

Duncan Jones, who led the tour side in Argentina, and Stephen Jones are in contention for the role.

Jenkins said: ''I'm looking for someone who will lead the team throughout this season and into the Rugby World Cup next year. I will not be rushed into making a decision.

''There is already a huge amount of interest in the subject of the captaincy and I know a lot of people are desperate to find out who will be the Wales captain for the coming season.

But I am looking at the bigger picture and feel that we should take our time to select a captain who will work with the coaching team and players throughout the coming year.

''It is vital to have a considered view before making this kind of commitment. I want to look at the form and mindset of a group of contenders in both training and match situations throughout September before making an announcement some time in October.

''I think we are lucky in Wales at the moment because there are a number of impressive candidates who are more than capable of taking on this type of role.''
