Berbizier names tour party
17 May 2006, 4:20 pm
Italy head coach Pierre Berbizier has named a 22-man squad ahead of the summer tour of Japan and Fiji.
Berbizier will add four more names to the squad following the semi-final of the French championship on June 3, which will see the Bergamasco brothers - Mauro and Mirco - and Sergio Parisse play for Stade Francais, while Ramiro Pez will run out for Perpignan.

Salvatore Perugini, Alessandro Zanni, Cristian Stoica, Maurizio Zaffiri, Gonzalo Canale and Kaine Robertson all miss the tour through injury.

According to team manager Carlo Checchinato, Berbizier has four extra players in mind in case of any further injuries in the semi-final.

We have four players on standby just to avoid any surprises, Checchinato said.

We need to bear in mind there are two very busy weeks of activity ahead in the respective championship play-offs in France and Italy.

Even without the injured players, I still believe this is a great squad to face two good teams like Japan and Fiji.

Checchinato highlighted the return of influential centre Andrea Masi after a year-long absence with a leg injury.

Dont forget the important return of Andrea Masi after a year out with injury, he said.

Also we call from the Azzurri Sevens team the prominent Benjamin De Jager, who showed he possesses some exciting skills that are still to be proved.

Checchinato is also excited about the call-up for Montpellier utility back David Bortolussi.

He grew up as a rugby player in France but has an Italian father so we have the chance to take him on the tour, Checchinato said.

We are trying to call on the same group of players regularly while adding a few new faces to give identity to this new squad.

Squad:

Forwards: Andrea Lo Cicero (LAquila), Andrea Marcato (Treviso), Andrea Masi (Viadana), Carlos Nieto (Leicester), Fabio Ongaro, Silvio Orlando, Simon Picone (all Treviso), Michele Sepe (HDI UR Capitolina), Josh Sole (Viadana), Staibano (Parma), Marco Bortolami (Narbonne, capt)

Backs: Matias Aguero (Viadana), Robert Barbieri (Parma), David Bortolussi (Montpellier), Pablo Canavosio (Calvisano), David Dallan (Treviso), Benjamin De Jager (Amatori Catania), Carlo Antonio Del Fava (Bourgoin), Santiago Dellape (Agen), Carlo Festuccia (SKG Gran Parma), Ezio Galon (Parma), Paul Griffen (Calvisano)
