Dallaglio extends Wasps deal
30 March 2006, 9:55 am
England forward Lawrence Dallaglio has signed a two-year contract extension with Wasps.
The 33-year-old, who won the World Cup in 2003, began his career with the club and looks set to finish it with them.

Im delighted to have re-signed for the club, which means in effect that Ill finish my playing career where I started, at Wasps, said Dallaglio.

The last three years in particular have gone very well for everyone at the club, and over the next two years we will continue to drive the club forward with the aim of maintaining that level of success.

When a player thinks about re-signing, a number of factors come into consideration. There is, of course, a financial element, but more important are family priorities and the consideration of where, as a player, you can gain the opportunity to play the best rugby.

This club has always been about offering players the possibility of playing the best rugby they can, maximising their potential and opportunities.

Therefore, Im very happy to be continuing my long and proud association with London Wasps.

Recent form indicates another tilt at the Webb Ellis Trophy may be beyond him - he will be 36 when the tournament in France begins - but he remains a crucial figure at Wasps.

Dallaglio - who featured as a substitute during England's disappointing RBS 6 Nations Championship campaign - has spent his entire career at Wasps, making his debut in 1993 and clocking up 285 appearances.

He has led the club to three consecutive Premiership titles and European Cup glory in 2004 - success that has convinced him the best chance of realising his remaining ambitions will be at Causeway Stadium.

Director of rugby Ian McGeechan is delighted to retain one of the greats of world rugby and hailed the leadership qualities that have made Dallaglio a Wasps and England legend.

"Lawrence is one of the giants of the English and world game and we are delighted that he is remaining with us for a further two years," he said.

"He has proved himself an inspirational leader at Wasps over a long period of time, and combined that with exceptional professionalism in his approach and preparation as a player."
