Week Six
19 March 2006, 8:44 pm
I am a bit upset because we were looking for a win which was the only thing we have failed to do in this year's tournament where we have taken a step forward.
We made some mistakes but in general our performances have been good - although the Scotland game was one of the worst we have played. Our kicking was poor in terms of precision and Scotland were able to control parts of the game while I think we failed in that respect.

We had at least three clear-cut chances to score which we did not take and that is something you can not do at the highest level.

Its disappointing for all of us but I believe the tournament as a whole has been good for us. Once again we had the chance to win but once again we were missing the killer instinct.

We gave away a needless penalty and we did not control the ball as well as we can.

But there are many positives we can take and this has been a very good competition. I believe Pierre Berbizier has done a very good job and so have the players.

Mirco Bergamasco has again showed his quality as a player and there were other good performances as well but Scotland played very well and defended bravely.

Definitely taking the tournament as a whole we must take the positives and compared to the performances on the pitch we did not get what we deserved.

To be honest I would say we have taken a big step forwards and that is in large part down to the players and the new confidence in the team.

On the negative side we have to do work with our lineouts but we have definitely improved considerably from last year.

We were well in the match in every game until the closing minutes - even against France and we also were unlucky not to beat Ireland.

Italy are now a proper team because we looked competitive every week. I believe it has been a fantastic season because every team has been in with a chance.

There is a surprise every year - last year it was Wales and this year it was Scotland. Maybe it will be Italys turn next year.

More and more people are getting interested in rugby in Italy and we may have to think about how we can accommodate the new interest.

We had the stadium sold out for the Scotland game and I am told we could have had 15,000 more people if we had had enough room. Its something we need to think about.
