England captain Martin Corry has read the riot act to his men ahead of Saturday's RBS 6 Nations Championship clash with Ireland and warned: "We cannot even contemplate this going badly."
England return to Twickenham after successive tryless defeats to Scotland and France and the squad conducted an open and honest meeting on Monday to try and thrash out the reasons behind them.
Corry sent out his message loud and clear, saying: We cannot allow another performance like that to happen.
It was a very, very bad day and, as every one of us players has to admit, it was not acceptable.
We have got to take the criticism on the chin. We are not going to make any excuses. It was sub-standard and our basic skills werent up to scratch.
First off we have to admit it and then work to rectify it. That is what we have done.
The defeat and the manner of the defeat has hit us hard.
The goals we set ourselves are gone. We have one opportunity now against Ireland. It wont right the wrongs but it will put us back on the roads upwards.
This is purely about us now. We have got one opportunity to show our character.
I can guarantee everything an England fan is feeling we are feeling 10-fold. I still havent got the Paris defeat out of my system.
We are very disappointed with the way we played in the last two games for England. We have one opportunity to get things back on track and that one opportunity is Ireland.
We cannot even contemplate it going badly this weekend. We are at the stage where we have to perform.
But Corry knows that for all his motivational speeches, the verdict on Englands 2006 RBS 6 Nations campaign has been delivered.
Whatever happens, this weekend is still going to be overshadowed by how we played against Scotland and France, added Corry.
But what we have is an opportunity to show we are a very, very good side. We have to make sure that every time we take the field we are a very good side.
The last two games we have taken two huge backwards steps.
But the players have taken full responsibility for what happened on Sunday. Its a case of We messed it up - what do we do to put it right?
