O'Driscoll relishing Abbott challenge
14 March 2006, 4:45 pm
While England ring the changes, Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan is happy to keep faith with his trophy-chasing team for Saturday's RBS 6 Nations Championship finale.
A repeat of their victory at Twickenham two years ago would hand Ireland their second Triple Crown in three years and, if coupled with defeat for France in Cardiff two hours earlier, would enable Brian ODriscolls men to clinch their first championship win since 1985.

Predictably, the only Irish change from the side that beat Scotland 15-9 at Lansdowne Road is on the bench where Wasps flanker Jonny OConnor, having recovered from a groin injury, replaces Munsters Mick ODriscoll.

England coach Andy Robinson, on the other hand, has made seven changes to the side that crumbled in Paris but ODriscoll believes, rather than panicking, he has taken the bull by the horns.

Its up to Andy Robinson if he feels these are the steps he needs to take before their summer tour, said the Ireland captain.

If he feels he has to give other guys an opportunity to put their hands up for next years World Cup, re-jigging his team this time next year is not the time to do it.

I suppose, in a way he is taking the bull by the horns and finding out what his best side is.

Among the changes is the introduction of Stuart Abbott at the expense Mike Tindall and ODriscoll believes the Wasps centre will be under pressure to perform.

Stuart Abbott has been playing well for Wasps and I guess he deserves his opportunity, ODriscoll added.

He is probably more of a Will Greenwood/Mike Catt-type centre in that he is a playmaker but he is not afraid to take the ball on himself.

He might vary their game a little but there is quite a lot of pressure on him too. Hes been given his opportunity now and its up to him to take it.

OSullivan wasted little time on his team selection after his side dominated the Scots to earn their third win from four matches.

I was pretty happy with the performance last weekend, he said. I thought it was probably our best 80 minutes of the championship so there is no reason to change it now.

Jonny had a fitness test this morning and took a full part in training and was fine so he comes back onto the bench.

If Ireland are to get their hands on the championship, they need a favour from Wales and OSullivan believes a win over the unpredictable French is not out of the question, not that he will lose sleep over the prospect.

Im not dwelling on it because its not something we can control, said OSullivan. Its a waste of energy.

We have to focus on what we can control and thats winning the game against England. If we do that, we win a Triple Crown and Ill take that out of this championship.

What happens after that depends on what happens in Cardiff. Well know the result in Cardiff before we kick off any way.
