Dallaglio surprised by hype
4 March 2006, 7:25 pm
Wasps captain Lawrence Dallaglio insists he has every right to press his England claims and keep the pressure on captain Martin Corry.
The two number eights met in a head-to-head battle at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, where Dallaglio prevailed as Wasps won a place in the Anglo-Welsh Cup final with a 22-17 victory over Leicester.

Corry, the England captain, has been replaced by Dallaglio twice in three RBS 6 Nations Championship games this season, but the Wasps number eight has dismissed any suggestion of a rift.

I am baffled by the interest in it all. I put my hand up for selection, I had 73 caps when I came out of retirement and said I want to play for England again, he said.

''People are making me out to be a bit of a villain. There needs to be competition in the whole team.

''Sixteen of the players out there will join up at Pennyhill Park next week (ahead of the France game) and if we can show that sort of commitment in Paris hopefully we can enjoy a great game.''

Wasps relied on 17 points from fly-half Jeremy Staunton and a breakaway try from Ayoola Erinle to overcome Leicester, who ran in three tries from Tom Varndell, Leon Lloyd and Dan Hipkiss.

''We both have the mentality to win trophies - that is why it was such a great contest. There is not a huge amount between the two sides today,'' said Dallaglio.

''We have come out on top, on another day it might have been Leicester but we will enjoy our day at Twickenham.''
