The atmosphere in Edinburgh was the best I've seen in a long time and Scotland came into the game believing they had a genuine chance of winning.

They had played well in the autumn internationals, beat France and battled gamely with 14 men against Wales.

The game was never going to be pretty, but Scotland's defence was outstanding and that's what won it.

England just didn't perform - they were one-dimensional and tried to bludgeon their way through the Scottish defence, when they needed more guile.

England have learned in previous Calcutta Cup games that you have to keep the scoreboard ticking over - if it is 9-9 or 13-13 going into the final quarter, you are in trouble as the crowd will get behind Scotland.

Frank Hadden's tactics were also spot on, but I think Andy Robinson got his wrong. He brought on Lawrence Dallaglio, Simon Shaw and Matt Dawson too late - it takes six or seven minutes for replacements to find the pace of the game.

Jason White was excellent for Scotland but Ally Hogg was my man-of-the-match - I thought there were three of him on the pitch at one point!

Jamie Noon came out of the game with some credit for England after making a couple of good breaks, but overall England were found wanting technically and tactically.

England will learn from their mistakes in this game, which is one positive to take. They need to cope with these setbacks to improve and become a better team.

I always said England wouldn't win the Grand Slam, but I think they'll now go to France and win.
