Blair expects bright future
7 February 2006, 5:42 pm
Scotland scrum-half Mike Blair believes the thrilling RBS 6 Nations Championship win over France on Sunday can act as a catalyst for a bright new future for the game.
The Scots stunned the pre-tournament favourites with 20-16 triumph at Murrayfield to open their campaign in style.

But, before the weekend, only 59,000 tickets for the Calcutta Cup clash with England at Murrayfield on February 25 had been sold.

However, fans queued from 5am this morning to snap up the remaining 8,500 seats within the first six hours of going on sale.

Blair, who has signed a new two-year deal with Edinburgh Gunners, is delighted to see the upsurge in interest in the Scottish game.

Now the 24-year-old is aiming to build on the win over the French to maintain the current interest.

Blair said: "We drove past the ticket office this morning on the way to training and there were 500 people queuing for tickets.

"I'm sure that wouldn't have happened if we hadn't won. Success breeds confidence and, hopefully, the country can get behind us again.

"Over the last couple of years, rugby has slipped back a bit - we are now way behind football in terms of crowd numbers and the level of support we have - but things are on a bit of a high at the moment.

"The professional teams are doing well, and with the win on Sunday, we will hopefully see more and more rugby supporters coming out of the woodwork.

"Everyone who is Scottish and plays professional rugby should be looking to make rugby a main sport again and hopefully we took a big step towards that on Sunday.

"We've been waiting a long time for a big win like that. We all felt that we had a real chance and we proved it with what could almost be classed as a comfortable win.''
