Italy flanker Aaron Persico has warned opponents not to underestimate the Azzurri in this season's RBS 6 Nations championship ahead of their opening game at Ireland.
Persico, who plays for French side Agen, is one of the most experienced players in the Italian squad with 54 caps.
However, he also admitted injuries will contribute to what is already going to be a very difficult RBS 6 Nations campaign this year.
The New Zealand-born back-rower, who left Italy in 2003 to join Leeds Tykes in England before moving to the French Top 14, said: ''This tournament could be a surprise for everybody.
I'm so excited to be part of the Italy squad again even if this year will hard for us considering the injuries to many players and the fact we have a very young team.
''We are going to play three games away and two at home, which could be an advantage, especially the first one in Ireland where we can surprise our opponents.
Persico feels he is playing well and wants to take advantage of any chance to make a huge impression in this seasons competition.
''I'm ready to play in this tournament, my form is excellent, and I'm ready for this challenge,'' said Persico, who also had encouraging words for Italys French coach Pierre Berbizier.
''I'm sure our new coach will have a few tricks for our opponents and if we play with determination, we can be proud of ourselves.''
Italy ended up with the wooden spoon in last seasons RBS 6 Nations and avoiding the bottom spot the previous two campaigns.
