The South African Rugby Union and the Italian Rugby Federation have confirmed that the proposed Test match between the Springboks and Italy, scheduled for Saturday, December 3 in Rome, will not now take place.
The Italian Rugby Federation (FIR) made the decision because they would not be able to field all their first-choice players due to existing agreements with their clubs.
In a letter to SA Rugby, Giancarlo Dondi, president of the Italian Rugby Federation, expressed his disappointment that the Test match will no longer take place.
''Our Union is always honoured to host SA Rugby in our country. We share your disappointment and take this opportunity to thank you for your co-operation in this matter, confident we will be able to find a suitable arrangement for the near future, he said.
South Africas end-of-year tour begins on November 5 when they tackle Argentina in Buenos Aires.
They then travel to Europe for Test matches against Wales in Cardiff on November 19 and France in Paris a week later.
The Springbok squad will be announced on Saturday, October 22 after the final 2005 Absa Currie Cup Premier Division matches.
