Bergamasco ready for Wallaby test
23 June 2005, 6:25 pm
Italy flanker Mauro Bergamasco is aware of the size of the task facing his team when they take on Australia in Melbourne on Saturday.
The Italians have been buoyed by their surprise 30-29 victory in the second Test against Argentina in Cordoba last Friday.

However, Bergamasco knows the Wallabies will provide a different challenge altogether, although he insists the Azzurri will not go down without a fight.

I'm sure we will be part of a great game, even if the result might go against us at the end of that game, said Bergamasco.

I believe, if we respect our principal objectives given by our coach Pierre Berbizier, then I'm sure we can play even better than last Friday against Argentina.

Our aim for this game is not to commit mistakes and if this happens we can make it difficult for the Wallabies.

We know we are going to face one of the best three teams in the world, but I can say we are going to play rugby and not simply defend for 80 minutes.

Scrum-half Paul Griffen is excited about the prospect of playing against Australian legend George Gregan.

The 30-year-old will line up opposite the 106 times capped Gregan, who is returning to action after a 10-week lay off with a broken leg.

And Griffen is aware he will have to be on his toes from the first minute to the last if he is going to keep the Wallaby skipper in check.

Its going to be an interesting duel against a great player, Griffen said.

Gregans experience with 106 caps for the Wallabies is unbelievable and I cant afford to make any mistakes against him. Ill need to concentrate for every minute of the game.

I'm in a good mood and I will respect Gregan at 10:05 on Saturday evening but I'm going into this match to win the duel against him.

Italy side to face Australia: Gert Peens; Kaine Robertson, Gonzalo Canale, Andrea Masi, Antonio Mannato; Ramiro Pez, Paul Griffen; Andrea Lo Cicero, Carlo Festuccia, Martin Castrogiovanni, Cristian Bezzi, Marco Bortolami (capt), David Dal Maso, Mauro Bergamasco, Sergio Parisse.

Replacements: Michele Rizzo, Carlos Nieto, Antonio Pavanello, Silvio Orlando, Pablo Canavosio, Cristian Zanoletti, Walter Pozzebon.
