Williams wants to build on Grand Slam
25 March 2005, 9:49 am
RBS 6 Nations player of the championship Martyn Williams is determined to build on Wales' 2005 Grand Slam triumph.
Wales secured their first Grand Slam for 27 years, first win over Ireland since 1993 and their first championship title for 11 seasons with a 32-20 triumph in Cardiff.

Williams said: We dont want this Grand Slam to be a one-off. We need to go on and develop from this and there is enough youth in the squad to do that.

We are nowhere near the guys of the 1970s. They won numerous championships and Grand Slams - we have only won one. Its an honour just to be compared to those guys.

The 54 times capped Williams added: As well as championships there is the 2007 World Cup. We cant say whether we are going to win it but hopefully we would go one better than the quarter-finals.

The 29-year-old revealed it was an honour to be named RBS 6 Nations Player of the Championship, especially after receiving more than a third of the 23,000 votes cast, beating off the challenge of Ireland skipper Brian ODriscoll.

Its a real surprise to get this accolade, especially to be chosen ahead of such quality players, said Williams, who only started for Wales against England because of an injury to Colin Charvis.

Its more than I expected and its a tribute to the efforts put in by every member of the Welsh squad.

When I heard about this award, I thought what about Gethin Jenkins, Shane Williams and Stephen Jones among others?

They are all deserving winners of this and thats a testament to the Wales side as a whole.''
