Williams: Scots can win title next year
20 March 2005, 1:29 pm
Matt Williams has predicted Scotland can emulate Grand Slam winners Wales by turning around their ailing rugby fortunes and winning the RBS 6 Nations Championship.
Scotland have won just one match this year - beating wooden spooners Italy 18-10 despite not scoring a try - but coach Williams boldly claimed that, given another 12 months of rebuilding, he will have a team to win the title.

His forecast came after Scotland conceded seven tries to England for the first time in the 122-year history of the Calcutta Cup, crashing to a 43-22 defeat just a week after being trounced 46-22 by Wales.

Scotland were also humbled 40-13 by Ireland. Those scores tell the story and Williams did concede that they going nowhere until they plug their leaky defence.

But he sees hope in the way his players have mounted stirring fightbacks in their last two matches against both Wales and England.

We played very aggressive running rugby and when we did that we were good. Were missing tackles and thats a problem we have nationally, said Williams.

Its a problem we have been working on and will have to continue working on at all levels.

You cannot miss the simple tackles that we are missing and win the game. Having said that there were times in that game when we defended and tackled very, very well but there were other times, which we should be concerned about, when we had players there and just fell off them.

That put us under pressure but the guys responded magnificently by running the ball and encouraged each other with a passion. But if we miss tackles thats it, full stop, end of story, admitted the defiant Australian who took hope from adversity in the way his team came back at England to score three good tries.

What this game showed, the one thing it proved to me, is that Scotland can win the Six Nations. We can win the championship.

It might take us another year but every one of our players competed and we can show the players this is what you did right and this is what you can do better and if you do that you can win.
