Banter spurs Cueto on
13 March 2005, 1:34 pm
England hat-trick hero Mark Cueto admitted he had been motivated by the banter which exists within the England squad.
The Sale Sharks winger scored three outstanding tries in his sides commanding 39-7 win over winless Italy at Twickenham yesterday.

The game marked England's first victory of this season's RBS 6 Nations, and Cueto's first international tries since November.

The 25-year-old's strike-rate now stands at an impressive seven tries in seven internationals, but he revealed that some harsh - if ultimately playful - words from his colleagues spurred him on during the game.

Ive been struggling to get over the line a bit this year and theres been a bit of banter flying about both with the England squad and up at Sale,'' Cueto said.

I hadnt scored a try in 2005 before today so its especially nice to have scored a hat-trick.

From a team and squad point of view its just brilliant to get that first win in the Six Nations.

Although he had only gone three England games without scoring - having what appeared a legitimate try ruled out for offside against Ireland - Cueto admitted his lack of tries had begun to play on his mind.

As a winger you are there to score tries and it does stay in the back of your mind,'' Cueto said, ''Sometimes you get a bit frustrated by it and try to force things a bit too much.

Two of Cueto's tries were set up by perfectly timed passes from Newcastle Falcons centre Jamie Noon, who enjoyed a fine afternoon's work, and the winger gave credit to the performance of England's backs.

To be honest I dont think I had to do a great deal for any of my tries, it was more the lines and the hands of the guys inside,'' Cueto said.
