RFU agree deal with Wigan for Farrell
11 March 2005, 3:00 pm
Andy Farrell, the Great Britain rugby league captain, has moved a step closer to switching to rugby union.
England coach Andy Robinson has revealed the RFU have agreed a deal with Farrell's club Wigan Warriors, but the player - currently recovering from a knee injury - faces a further medical before it goes through.

Farrell had his initial tests on Wednesday and Thursday, but Robinson declined to reveal the results.

The transfer has moved on after Wigan owner Dave Whelan issued an ultimatum to the RFU, threatening to pull out unless the deal was finalised by the end of this week.

Robinson said: An agreement has been reached between the RFU and Wigan, and it's now time to look at the medical protocols and the club he is going to. That has not been agreed yet.

Robinson also refused to speculate on whether Farrell would be part of the England rugby union squad for the Churchill Cup tour to Canada in June.

As soon as everything is agreed, we will look at that, he said.

But he is refusing to get involved in speculation over Farrell, or what position he will play in the 15-a-side game.

He could line up in the centre, or the back row of the pack, but Robinson insists he wants to concentrate on England's remaining two matches in the RBS 6 Nations Championship, against Italy and Scotland.

He told a press conference at Twickenham: After the two matches I will sit down and paint the picture for you of how I see Andy Farrell. Then you will know the club he's going to.

There is a clear position for us. When we know the club we can really start talking about how we will progress.
