Wales injury problems mount
7 March 2005, 10:37 am
Wales are hopeful they can avert a hooking crisis in the build-up to Sunday's RBS 6 Nations Championship clash against Scotland at Murrayfield.
Current first-choice hooker Mefin Davies is battling to be fit after fracturing the tip of his thumb during the victory over France in Paris nine days ago.

His obvious replacement, Llanelli Scarlets forward Robin McBryde currently has a knee problem, while another alternative - Newport Gwent Dragons hooker Steve Jones - is nursing a hamstring strain.

Llanelli prospect Matthew Rees trained with the Wales squad last week, but there are no plans at this stage to call up any reinforcements with the Wales camp hopeful McBryde and Jones will be fit.

Davies pulled out of Gloucester's Powergen Cup semi-final defeat against Bath on Sunday, and it would appear he only has an outside chance of making the Scotland encounter.

"Mefin has fractured the tip of his thumb and he remains a doubt for next weekend,'' said Wales squad physiotherapist Mark Davies.

"He has a chance of playing, but we will be monitoring the situation this week.''

McBryde's chances of recovering from knee trouble are much better though, and Davies added: "Robin had a pretty good week last week, and his chances are pretty good. We are looking at things fairly favourably.''

The other main concern for Wales coach Mike Ruddock is an ankle injury sustained by scrum-half Gareth Cooper.

Cooper was hurt during Saturday's Tsunami IRB game at Twickenham between northern and southern hemisphere select sides, and he was forced off early in the second half.

"Gareth has an ankle sprain which is currently being assessed, and we will know more within the next 24 hours,'' Davies said.
