Guscott calls for Corry to lead England
3 March 2005, 10:32 am
England legend Jeremy Guscott has called for Martin Corry to replace Jason Robinson as captain of England.
Robinson suffered a torn thumb ligament in Sunday's RBS 6 Nations defeat to Ireland, and will miss the rest of the tournament.

With a horrific injury list robbing coach Andy Robinson of other obvious captaincy candidates like Richard Hill, Mike Tindall and Phil Vickery, Guscott believes that Corry - who is in the form of life - is the best man for the job.

Guscott is convinced that the Leicester Tigers number eight would be a better choice than former England captain Matt Dawson.

''Someone like Matt Dawson could do the job because of his experience, and as a former captain he's been there before,'' Guscott told BBC Sport.

''However, England are expected to win these games and the question has to be, do you bring Matt Dawson back, because Harry Ellis is supposed to be the future?

''Another candidate for me would be Martin Corry, because he seems to be the stand-out forward at the moment for England.

''He would lead from the front and be more of a ''follow me'' kind of leader, rather than one who does lots of talking.

''He's quite a quiet character but I think sometimes the less people say the more effective they can be - you lead by example rather than what you say, or a combination of both.

''I don't think there is any reason why Corry shouldn't get it,'' Guscott added.
