Scotland mindful of failure
22 February 2005, 9:50 am
Scotland skipper Gordon Bulloch has revealed how a sports psychologist is helping the Scotland team to overcome their mental fragility.
Scotland have let winning positions slip in both of their opening two RBS 6 Nations games against France and Ireland, and Bulloch believes that the team's problems lie in their mental approach rather than deficiencies in skill levels.

Sports psychologist Tony Westbury has been holding one-on-one sessions with the players, and Bulloch is happy with the progress he has been making.

He said: We get a bit anxious in key situations. We try and over-perform and try and get things perfect rather than relaxing and concentrating on the phase of play in front of us.''

We are trying to score off first phase and score off contact but were making basic mistakes before we get to that point.

But weve been using Tony who has come on board since the start of the season and its been quite helpful in certain situations.

Its more one-to-one rather than a team thing. We have a chat with him to find out how things havent been going right on the pitch and how to deal with these problems.

He tells us if something goes wrong to get it out of your mind as quickly as possible rather than take it onto the next phase so from that point of view he has been helpful.
