Scotland prop Bruce Douglas will captain Borders in their Celtic League trip to Neath-Swansea Ospreys on Saturday.
Douglas will take over the armband from Paul Thomson, who is being rested as part of the rule governing overseas players.
Thomson will be replaced at loosehead prop by Tom McGee, and Borders head coach Steve Bates believes that captain Douglas will prove an inspiration to his team.
Bates said: Bruce deserves to take over as captain. He's a great leader on the field and a very good player.
It's also a great opportunity for Tommy to start in a game of this quality. He's champing at the bit.
You dont get much harder games than the Ospreys away from home. So we'll find out a lot about Tommy.
The game also sees Simon Taylor make his first appearance for Edingburgh since recovering from knee ligament damage sustained in last year's RBS 6 Nations.
He will not be joined in the pack by Scotland lock Scott MacLeod, however, who has recovered from an ankle injury but is still lacking match fitness.
