Goode performances rewarded
17 February 2005, 5:05 pm
Leicester fly-half Andy Goode has been called into England's 30-man training squad ahead of the RBS 6 Nations clash with Ireland in Dublin on February 27.
Goode trained with England last month and impressed head coach Andy Robinson with his performance in the England A victory over France A at Bath last Friday.

Robinson said: ''Andy has been knocking on the England door recently, with his good form for Leicester and I felt he impressed last week in his A game performance.

So he earns his selection to the squad for what will be a massively important game against Ireland.

The 24-year-old's performance for England A, in which he booted 10 points and contributed a clever tactical kicking game in the 30-20 victory, came the night before Charlie Hodgson's poor performance at Twickenham as France snatched victory.

Also impressive that evening was Leicester centre Ollie Smith, who underlined his international credentials by scoring one try and setting up another.

Smith has also been included in the 30-man squad, along with Newcastle's 19-year-old Mathew Tait, who started against Wales in Cardiff but was then left out of the match 22 to play France.

Leicester prop Julian White is not included as he continues to recover from the neck injury which kept him out of the France game.

White, replaced by Phil Vickery last weekend, will not feature against Ireland - but Robinson hopes to have him available for the final two games against Italy and Scotland.

Julian White has not yet recovered from the neck injury he picked up in the Wales game, but I'm sure he will return to play an important part in our games later in the championship,'' said Robinson.

Gloucester loose forward James Forrester, who made his Test debut from the bench against Wales in Cardiff, drops out of the squad.
