Bortolami believes Italy will need to stop a back-line featuring the likes of dazzling winger Shane Williams and full-back Gareth Thomas if they are to overcome Wales.

Certainly they (Wales) have changed a lot since the World Cup, he added. They are more determined and the back-line is one of the strongest around at present.

They are formidable in the three-quarter line when they are attacking with two big wingers. I believe it will be key to stop players like Shane Williams and Gareth Thomas, who are among the strongest and most technically-gifted players in their team. Gavin Henson is also a real threat.

Italy coach John Kirwan has been dealt a blow in the build-up to the match, with Gonzalo Canale sustaining a shoulder injury in training on Wednesday.

However Bortolami is confident replacement centre Walter Pozzebon will adequately compensate for the loss of Canale.

Gonzalo Canale is important for us especially now he is forging a very good partnership in the centre with Andrea Masi, Bortolami added.

But his replacement Walter Pozzebon knows his job and his experience will fill the empty space left by Canale.

Bortolami added that the fans will once again have an important part to play in guiding the Azzurri to victory in Rome.

Personally, I think it is fantastic to play at the Flaminio, he said.
