Cusiter: Players owe Williams for show of faith
11 February 2005, 10:43 am
Scotland scrum-half Chris Cusiter claims Matt Williams will not regret putting his trust in the same players.
The Australian coach has given his 22-man squad a vote of confidence going into the latest RBS 6 Nations Championship game against Ireland at Murrayfield on Saturday despite suffering a heartbreaking defeat in Paris last weekend.

Hugo Southwell has remained at inside-centre despite his costly late error at the hands of the lucky French side but his team-mate believes continuity is the key as Scotland seek to get their first win in this seasons championship.

I suppose that is good for the side, said Cusiter.

It is good for the players after what happened in Paris and it is a vote of confidence.

For me the relationship with the nine and 10 is important and the more I play with them the more understanding I will get and hopefully we will see that pay off this weekend.

The 22-year-old Borders star admitted watching the tape of last weeks cruel finale in the Stade de France made it all the more depressing for him and his team-mates.

Touch judge Simon McDowell and referee Nigel Williams made big decisions which turned the match in Frances favour and earned strong words from the furious Scotland coach.

But Cusiter insists there is no time for the Scotland squad to feel sorry for themselves with the Irish arrival.

He sighed: It was even more so looking at the tape when you see the score sitting at 9-9 with a few minutes to go and then they score the try which makes it hard to cope with.

We have had the time to think about those things and we know we should have picked up a point or possibly should have won the game but there is no time to dwell on it too much.

What is important is that we take it forward from there now into the Ireland game.
