Relieved Betsen happy with verdict
10 February 2005, 11:17 am
France flanker Serge Betsen has thanked the European Rugby Cup for freeing him to play in Sunday's RBS 6 Nations clash with England after they decided not to ban him for his challenge on Wasps centre Stuart Abbott.
The Frenchmans case was heard by the rugby organisation in Glasgow on Wednesday after he caused a serious leg injury to the England international during a European Cup clash between Wasps and Biarritz on January 15.

Betsen will now be able play at Twickenham on Sunday after being named in the starting line-up by coach Bernard Laporte.

I want to thank them (the ERC) for understanding that my gesture was not meant to harm Stuart Abbott, Betsen said.

I was really scared of being suspended and I was eager to hear the verdict. I must be more careful on the pitch.

I am not a violent player and I am annoyed some of my gestures might be seen as such. I am extremely relieved about this decision.

The France set-up were extremely relieved at the decision which will mean their back row will feature one of its pivotal performers in the crunch encounter.
The whole French camp is delighted, team manager Jo Maso told L'Equipe.

Serge has been cleared as a player but also as a man. We trust the ERCs justice.

This decision means we dont have to change the starting XV, in which Serge is a key element, ahead of the Twickenham clash.

It is a shame he missed out on our latest training sessions but this is no big deal as he knows our game organisation well.
