The versatile Edinburgh player still shudders at the memory of his last appearance in a national jersey - a miserable match at full-back last autumn when the Springboks romped to a 45-10 victory at Murrayfield.

However, Scotland coach Matt Williams has gambled by partnering Southwell and Andy Craig in the centre for the daunting RBS 6 Nations Championship opener in Paris.

And the London-born 24-year-old is adamant he will not let anybody down.

''I am not fazed by this,'' admitted Southwell. ''I expect to play well and since the last game things have gone well.

''This is a great opportunity to prove that was a one-off.

''It was totally out of character and I hadn't had a game like that in a while. It was just one of those games.

''I dwelled on it for a while but you get over it as quickly as possible and I am looking forward to the Six Nations.

''I watched it on the video and I dwelled on it in my mind but I just had to focus on the games ahead.

''I don't know what happened. The pressure was just as high as the other games but I made a few mental errors and I don't want a repeat of that.

''I am here to do a job and bring the other guys into play and it's a job I am relishing.
