Taylor looks to prove his fitness
3 February 2005, 10:13 am
Scotland international Simon Taylor has joined Saracens on a week-long loan in a bid to prove his fitness for the RBS 6 Nations.
The 25-year-old Lions player has recovered from knee ligament damage suffered in the final Six Nations fixture against Ireland in Dublin last March.

But with his club side Edinburgh Gunners out of action until February 19, the back-row forward has joined the Zurich Premiership side and will play against Northampton on Saturday and in a friendly against Super-12 side The Cats next Wednesday.

Taylor said: ''I'm very excited just to be playing again in quite strange circumstances.

Im ready to go but Id caution against expecting miracles.

Scottish Rugby Union director of rugby Ian McGeechan is confident the seven-day deal will be enough for the number eight to prove his fitness.

He said: Firstly, were delighted that Simon is ready to return to match action - and alongside the national management team, we are keen to see him back in contention for Scotland duty as soon as possible.

Obviously, if Edinburgh Rugby had had any fixture either this weekend or next then that would have given him the opportunity to get matches under his belt.

But because there are no Celtic League fixtures over the next fortnight and professional players cannot play for clubs in the BT Premiership, we have looked further afield and have agreed a temporary loan with Saracens.

Saracens director of rugby Steve Diamond said: We are delighted to be able to offer Simon his introduction back to top-class rugby after his unfortunate injury.

We wish him all the best and hope he can be ready to return to the international arena soon.
