Good injury news likely for Robinson
31 January 2005, 8:23 am
England boss Andy Robinson looks set to receive an encouraging fitness bulletin when his players begin assembling for the RBS 6 Nations Championship opener against Wales.
Robinsons 30-man squad will be on the training pitch at their Surrey base on Monday, and it appears the world champions might have avoided any late injury calamities.

A busy Premiership programme saw Newcastle centre Jamie Noon and Gloucester flanker Andy Hazell limp out of their clubs respective games, while World Cup winners Matt Dawson and Lewis Moody rested injuries as a precaution.

Noon though, who looks set to forge an all-Falcons midfield partnership with teenager Mathew Tait at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, was in much better spirits as he reported for England duty.

It is understood Noons leg injury has improved considerably since Friday night, when he left Vicarage Road on crutches following Newcastles 32-13 defeat against Saracens.

And Hazell also reported an improvement after receiving ice-pack treatment on his knee and ankle during the past 24 hours.

Dawson, meanwhile, is on course to make an England return after missing the autumn Test series when he was demoted from Robinsons elite player squad due to a clash between training and television commitments.

He has got a fitness test with England in the week, but he has got a good chance of playing, said Wasps rugby director Warren Gatland, assessing his scrum-halfs calf muscle strain.

Leicester coach John Wells is also upbeat about Moodys prospects after the Tigers back-row star missed a comfortable home win against Harlequins because of a hamstring problem.

If England hold back on his training early in the week, then he should be there or thereabouts for the weekend, said Wells.

A clean bill of health would be music to Robinsons ears, considering the troubled build-up he has endured for his first RBS 6 Nations game in charge.

Jonny Wilkinson (knee), Mike Tindall (foot), Will Greenwood (shoulder), Stuart Abbott (leg), Richard Hill (knee) and Martin Corry (elbow) are all currently recovering from injuries of varying degrees.

Only fly-half Wilkinson and number eight Corry have any realistic chance of featuring in the campaign, although not before Englands Lansdowne Road appointment with Ireland in Dublin on February 27.

If everyone reports fit, it would appear Robinson will make five personnel changes from the side beaten by Australia at Twickenham last time out.

Tait, who turns 19 next weekend, and Noon are poised to replace Tindall and Henry Paul, with Dawson taking over from Gloucesters Andy Gomarsall, who could miss out completely on a place in Englands match-day 22.

Up front, it is believed Leicester lock Ben Kay will start instead of Steve Borthwick, with a reworked back-row seeing Moody moving from openside to blindside flanker, Worsley filling Corrys number eight vacancy and Hazell called in for only his second England start.

There could be just six starters from the side that defeated Wales 31-21 at Twickenham last March - Dawson, Kay, skipper Jason Robinson, wing Josh Lewsey, hooker Steve Thompson and lock Danny Grewcock.
