Andy Robinson's fears that the weekend's Premiership fixtures would throw-up yet more injury woe for England appear to have been well founded.
Gloucester's Andy Hazell and Leicester Tigers' Lewis Moody are the latest players to be added to England's seemingly endless injury list.
Openside flanker Hazell limped out of Gloucesters 28-16 win over Worcester at Kingsholm with a knee injury, while blindside flanker Moody withdrew from Leicester's starting line-up against Harlequins with a hamstring injury.
Gloucester coach Nigel Melville sought to play down fears that Hazell would miss next Saturday's RBS 6 Nations opener with Wales at the Millennium Stadium by saying:
''Andy has taken a bang on his knee and he will be re-assessed tomorrow.
He should be fine for next Saturday - I dont think it is too serious.
Meanwhile, Tigers coach John Wells is also cautiously optimistic about Moodys chances of facing Wales.
If England hold back on his training early in the week then he should be there or thereabouts for the weekend, Wells said after the Tigers 32-17 win over struggling Quins.
Despite the soothing words of Melville and Wells, there is no doubt England coach Robinson will be seriously concerned about the make-up of both the England back-row and midfield.
Before the weekends round of Premiership fixtures, Robinson was already without Jonny Wilkinson, Mike Tindall, Will Greenwood, Stuart Abbott, Richard Hill and Martin Corry for the Cardiff clash.
In addition, Newcastle centre Jamie Noon suffered a dead leg in the Falcons Premiership
defeat against Saracens on Friday night, and scrum-half Matt Dawson missed Wasps 12-9 home defeat by Bath with a calf muscle strain .
Better news for England came with the performance of fly-half Charlie Hodgson, as Sale Sharks beat Northampton at Edgeley Park.
Hodgson kicked 17 points as the Sharks cruised to a 37-24 win over the Saints, as well as orchestrating some high quality back-play with a trademark mix of short and long passes.
Robinson would have been holding his breath in the closing stages when Hodgson went down with an ankle problem after a clash with Bryan Redpath, but the injury proved not to be serious.
