Pre-Tournament

There were a few factors why England underperformed in the RBS 6 Nations last year.
As a team we had probably reached our peak at the 2003 World Cup, in fact we were playing better during the tour Down Under that summer.

The England management stood still after winning in Sydney. We had the same training sessions, same meetings, same format - we were not moving forward like we had in the past.

I think the management team were still in the mindset of congratulating each other for winning the World Cup when we should have been moving forward.

A lot of players retired following our success, and you cant lose the quality of players we did and not feel the effects. We lost players who between them had amassed 400-500 Test caps. It was definitely a transitional period.

The 2004 summer tour to New Zealand and Australia was also a bit of a lull - we just didnt perform.

But a lot of players have stepped up to the mark since, we have a new coach and we are improving, moving in the right direction.

There are some tough battles ahead in the Six Nations but were not the favourites this year and that could help us.

I think this is the most open tournament for years, although France and Ireland are favourites. After those two, its England and Wales, Scotland and Italy.

We know how France can play, they can be brilliant at times, but consistency is the key for them.

Ireland really feel they can win games now - its a different mindset, a renewed confidence.

But Wales are first up for us. They have found a new level of confidence and played well during the autumn internationals. They have exciting backs and shrewd older heads in the forwards - they can compete with anyone on their day.

Weve never really had a walkover at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, every game is tough. Weve only really been able to take control in the last 20 minutes.

You have to make sure that you are well prepared because Wales play with great flair and passion and they seem to be improving all the time.

But I think England are capable of winning the Six Nations. Its great for everyone involved in the tournament that a number of teams can take the title - I cant wait for it to get started.
