Graeme Cattermole has resigned as chairman of the RFU management board.
Cattermoles resignation was accepted by the RFU council which met at Twickenham.
A statement from the RFU council said Cattermoles resignation was accepted with regret, noting the potential damage which could have been done to the Union following press speculation about internal conflict.
The statement added that the council had resolved to put internal divisions behind it and work together in accordance with the principles of good governance for the benefit of the game in England.
RFU president Malcolm Phillips will act as chairman of the management board until further notice.
