Rob Andrew has urged England supporters to be patient during the world champions' inevitable rebuilding phase.
England face Canada, South Africa and Australia at Twickenham next month, with caretaker coach Andy Robinson in charge and new captain Jonny Wilkinson directing operations on the field.
Wilkinson has been entrusted with leading a team that could bear little resemblance to the one that beat Australia in last years World Cup final, with possibly only five survivors - Wilkinson, Jason Robinson, Mike Tindall, Trevor Woodman and Steve Thompson - lining up against Canada on November 13.
Its great for him (Wilkinson) and for the club, said Newcastle rugby director and former England fly-half Andrew, reflecting on his star players new role.
My only reservation is that we should just not expect too much from him, or from the England team as a whole, to begin with.
Putting my protective Newcastle Falcons arm around him, I just hope people realise that England are starting to build again.
Its right that Jonny is captain, and its right that they build towards the next World Cup as a new era.
The (Martin) Johnson and Woodward era is finished, and the Wilkinson and Robinson era is starting. It is not going to start and finish in November.
