Hodge handed Scotland opportunity
2 September 2004, 11:06 am
Scotland head coach Matt Williams has handed stand-off Duncan Hodge the chance to resurrect his international career after naming the Leeds Tykes player in a 46-man elite training squad.
The squad will gather at Murrayfield on Mondays throughout September in preparation for the Autumn Test series against Australia, South Africa and Japan.

Hodge has not played under Williams for the national team after an elbow injury ruled him out of action before the RBS 6 Nations earlier this year.

He said: "Last season, things were going fine then I dislocated my elbow at probably the worst possible time and was out for three months from December.

"This season our warm-up games have gone well and I'm pleased to be included in the squad.''

Williams has also handed Saracens prop Nick Lloyd a squad place.

The 27-year-old has been part of the Scottish Exiles squad and qualifies for Scotland through a paternal grandmother from Aberdeen.

Williams told www.scottishrugby.org: "It's good to see so many players placing themselves in the selection arena for our four Tests in the autumn.

"The national squad for the Autumn Tests will be chosen subsequently based on the elite training squad.''

Ross Beattie, Simon Cross, Nathan Hines and Gavin Kerr all return from injury while Ross Ford, who missed the summer tour of Australia through IRB under-21 world championship duty, is included.

Uncapped Glasgow Warriors scrum-half Sam Pinder is also named in the squad.
