Wasps centre Stuart Abbott is set to miss England's autumn Tests because of a serious shoulder injury suffered on international duty.
Abbott, who has won seven caps, was hurt when England lost 36-12 to New Zealand in Auckland two months ago.
He flew home early from the summer tour for specialist treatment and subsequent surgery, and he is not expected to play again until December.
South Africa-born Abbott would have been a major contender for an England midfield berth, and his absence will be a blow to coach Sir Clive Woodward, with South Africa, Australia and Canada all on the November agenda.
Abbott apart, European and English Premiership champions Wasps will also be without fly-half Alex King, centre Fraser Waters and lock Simon Shaw for Thursday nights Anglo-Celtic Challenge match against Llanelli Scarlets at Stradey Park.
King is suffering from a slight knee strain, while Waters is recovering from ankle surgery he underwent two weeks ago and Shaw rests a neck strain.
Peter Richards, normally a scrum-half, will partner Ayoola Erinle in midfield, with new signing James Brooks featuring as Kings replacement.
Wasps England World Cup contingent of Lawrence Dallaglio, Josh Lewsey, Joe Worsley and new signing Matt Dawson all start though, and highly-rated Irish flanker Jonny OConnor continues his comeback from a serious Achilles injury.
Wasps, who kick off their Premiership campaign against Saracens at Twickenham on Saturday week, expect a tough test from the Scarlets, last seasons Celtic League champions.
Any team who visits Stradey Park knows there is no such thing as a friendly against Llanelli, said Wasps rugby director Warren Gatland.
This match is a great idea, as it tests two champion sides against each other and should provide the supporters with a thrilling match.
Llanelli will be captained by fly-half Gareth Bowen, who leads a side containing established names such as Scott Quinnell, Mark Taylor and Iestyn Thomas.
