Bishop dies
14 August 2004, 1:04 pm
Former Rugby Football Union president Bill Bishop OBE has died at the age of 74.
He was RFU president in 1995/96, the season that rugby union went open, and chaired the Bishop Commission, which was responsible for introducing a league system in England.

He played hooker for several clubs in Cornwall, and represented the county on the RFU from 1976 to 1995.

"Bill Bishop was an institution in Cornish rugby," said RFU management board chairman Graeme Cattermole.

"He was a great friend and servant of rugby union, and although based in the south-west tip of England, travelled across the country on behalf of the game. He will be sadly missed, both in his home county and throughout the game."
