Goutta ready for France bow
9 July 2004, 2:43 pm
France flanker Bernard Goutta expects to be overwhelmed by pride when he makes his international debut against Canada in Toronto on Saturday.
Goutta, who plays club rugby for Perpignan, has been named as one of three newcomers in Bernard Laportes starting XV for the second fixture on Frances North American tour.

One of my dreams is coming true with the French team, said Goutta.

Life is like a book whose pages we write one by one.

The blue shirt is a great reward for all the years I have spent working very hard throughout my career.

It will be an extremely proud moment for me to wear it.

Scrum-half Ludovic Loustau - a team-mate of Goutta at Perpignan - and Biarritzs Philippe Bidabe will also earn their first caps as Laporte tinkers with the side which struggled to see off the USA 39-31 in Hartford last weekend.

Goutta is determined to make a success of his call-up, even though he acknowledges he will have to make alterations to his game.

I will prepare as if I was playing against the All Blacks, he added.

I know I will have to show more intelligence in the game to adapt to the French team's tactics.

But I will remain the same. Only the shirt will change. I bring my own enthusiasm, determination and combative spirit.

Laporte is looking for a much-improved display from his side, especially in defence after conceding so many points to the Eagles last time out.

He said: The players lacked vigilance because in their minds they never thought that the match would be difficult.

We watched the video of our match with the USA and we clearly saw where we had failed.

That's simple, we only looked at the ball and never bothered about observing our rivals movements. Defence is the basics of modern rugby.
