Dallaglio issues Wallaby warning
25 June 2004, 11:04 am
England must stop Wallabies half-backs George Gregan and Stephen Larkham from bossing the World Cup final rematch with Australia- or be prepared to face the consequences.
That is the clear message from England skipper Lawrence Dallaglio as the world champions face their 18th and last Test match of a marathon 44-week campaign.

The Wallabies, left crestfallen by Jonny Wilkinsons dramatic drop-goal seven months ago, head into battle as firm favourites based on Englands Test series struggle in New Zealand, where they lost both encounters, conceded 72 points and failed to score a try.

England are also without 10 of their World Cup final starting XV, including talismanic figures such as Wilkinson, Jason Robinson and Phil Vickery and the retired Martin Johnson, while Australia field 12 survivors from November 22 in Sydney.

Only full-back Mat Rogers, centre Elton Flatley and flanker George Smith miss out, suggesting that Dallaglio and company are up against it.

A red rose victory would see them retain the Cook Cup and make it six wins in succession against Australia.

But if they lose, then head coach Sir Clive Woodward will be left to reflect on equalling his worst results sequence - four defeats - since taking charge almost seven years ago.

Dallaglio has no doubt that Wallabies captain Gregan, who wins his 98th cap, and fly-half playmaker Larkham are the men England must shackle.

There are always key players in games, but Gregan and Larkham have been outstanding over a number of years for Australia, he said.

If they are allowed a platform on which to really boss the game, then we know how good they can be.

It is important that we try and disrupt their pattern, because they really do run the game exceptionally well.
