Grimes verdict crucial for Scots
17 June 2004, 7:20 am
Scotland coach Matt Williams has named both Iain Fullarton and Craig Hamilton as possible partners to captain Scott Murray in the second row for the second Test against Australia.
With Stuart Grimes suspended but facing an International Rugby Board Appeals Committee hearing, Williams was forced to name his team with doubt still remaining over its final make-up.

Although privately intimating their confidence that Grimes will be cleared, Williams insisted IRB regulations prevented them from naming the Newcastle lock in the side so he bracketed Fullarton and Hamilton together for the number five shirt.

Murray was deemed fit enough to be included after suffering a hip injury in last Sundays 35-15 defeat to Australia and the team is otherwise unchanged from that which put up a brave display in Melbourne.

If the appeals panel was to uphold Grimes two-match suspension - imposed for trampling on David Lyons in Sundays first Test - Williams would then have to finalise which of his two replacements would start alongside Murray.

The issue in the second row we are leaving as a late decision, said Williams.

We have an appeal on Stuart Grimes and it would be improper of us to suggest he is part of the team because he is under suspension.

We cant select him. We would be breaking IRB rules. We have to stay within the the process and laws of the game which is what we are doing.

If the appeal is successful we will be in a position to review that. We would like Stuart to play if he is cleared.

Murray has been under an injury cloud since the first Test, when he suffered severe bruising and internal bleeding around the hip area following an almighty collision with Lyons.

But the Scotland medical staff worked solidly to not only ensure the injury did not become dangerously worse - there was a chance of calcification around the hip - but to get him ready to play.

Our medical staff deserve huge credit this week, said Williams.

They have worked unbelievably hard on Scott and he has been incredibly dedicated. He had eight sessions on Tuesday and he will train tomorrow.

We are still deciding, he added. The two players are talented guys but they have talents in different areas. We are just waiting to make a final decision which one we start. We would make that decision tomorrow.

The guys have been playing in our system, which has been a big benefit for us.

Fullarton, the Saracens-bound lock, started his only Test for Scotland four years ago while Hamilton has been one of the big finds of the tour for coach Matt Williams, who regularly describes his development as outstanding.

Scotland: H Southwell; S Lamont, B Hinshelwood, A Henderson, S Webster; D Parks, C Cusiter; T Smith, G Bulloch, B Douglas, I Fullarton/C Hamilton, S Murray (captain), J White, D MacFadyen, A Hogg.
Replacements: S Scott, C Smith, I Fullarton/C Hamilton, J Petrie, M Blair, G Ross, G Morrison.
