Henry forced to make changes
15 June 2004, 7:32 am
Injury has forced New Zealand coach Graham Henry into making changes to his starting line-up for Saturday's second Test against England at Auckland's Eden Park.
Wing Doug Howlett has been ruled out with a shoulder injury handing Nick Evans his first start for the All Blacks after making his debut off the bench in the 36-3 win over the world champions last weekend.

Evans will start at fullback with Mils Muliaina moving to Howlett's slot on the right wing.
Henry also has concerns over openside flanker and vice-captain Richie McCaw, who suffered a head knock in the win in Dunedin.

He sat out training on Monday with a headache and will undergo further tests this week.

If he fails to be fit Marty Holah will start in the number seven shirt with Craig Newby coming onto the bench.

Jimmy Cowan has also been bracketed with replacement Byron Kelleher after the scrum-half tweaked a hamstring in training on Monday.

The only other change sees veteran Andrew Mehrtens, New Zealand's record points scorer, pull on the black jersey for the first time in two years. He will start from the bench.

All Blacks assistant coach Wayne Smith said: Evans will be put under close scrutiny by England in the second Test.

"Nick will need a big night on defence because England have a good kicking game and they will be a different team this weekend and will plug the defensive holes,"
Smith, the former Northampton Saints coach, told www.allblacks.com.

"I know some of the England guys well and they are far too proud to let that happen again.

They will come in faster and the hits will be bigger. It will be a cracker of a game."

Smith added: "He (Evans) was excited about being named on the bench last week, but it's different when you're named in the starting XV. He trained well this week and he's a bright young fella."

Smith, who coached the All Blacks in 2000-01, was also thrilled to see Mehrtens back.
"Andrew has done himself proud these last couple of weeks. He supports Carlos (Spencer) and I take my hat off to him," he said.

New Zealand team to face England in the second Test in Auckland on Saturday: Nick Evans; Mils Muliaina, Tana Umaga (capt), Daniel Carter, Joe Rokocoko; Carlos Spencer, Justin Marshall; Kees Meeuws, Keven Mealamu, Carl Hayman, Chris Jack, Keith Robinson, Jono Gibbes, Richie McCaw/Marty Holah, Xavier Rush.

Replacements: Andrew Hore, Tony Woodcock, Jerry Collins, Marty Holah/Craig Newby, Byron Kelleher/Jimmy Cowan, Andrew Mehrtens, Sam Tuitupou.
