Tindall hurting after All Blacks defeat
14 June 2004, 9:12 am
Mike Tindall has admitted England were "cut deep" by their Dunedin drubbing at the hands of New Zealand.
Tindall and his team-mates are now back in Auckland, beginning preparations for arguably the most testing week of Sir Clive Woodwards coaching reign.

They must somehow pick themselves up - physically and mentally - from a 36-3 first Test defeat, which represented Englands biggest reversal since New Zealand crushed them 64-22 on the same Carisbrook ground six years ago.

With the All Blacks red-hot favourites to win next Saturdays second encounter at Eden Park - a venue where they last lost in 1994 - Tindall and company have got it all to do.

Having a result like that hurts - it cuts you deep, said the Bath centre.

But the good thing is we have a week to turn it around. Weve got to up our game, not turn the ball over as much and get the physicality right.

Tindalls fellow World Cup winner Josh Lewsey added: Every time you take the field, you should be mentally and physically there.

A lot is talked about fatigue and all that sort of stuff, but you have got to get excited when you come out here and play against some of the best players in the world.

Woodward, meanwhile, has vowed not to overreact, although changes seem certain after the faltering world champions came terribly unstuck.

Panic buttons are unlikely to be pressed but surgery must be carried out in certain areas to give England any realistic chance of levelling the series.

Hooker Steve Thompson, scrum-half Matt Dawson, lock Simon Shaw, flanker Chris Jones and wing James Simpson-Daniel are among those who seemingly face an anxious wait before Woodwards scheduled team announcement.
